- Repeaters (OSI Layer 1)
- Used to regenerate a signal distorted by
transmission loss. A Network Hub can be a type of
repeater relaying messages to all connected computers.
- Bridges - (OSI Layer 2)
- A device that connects local area networks together.
A Network Switch can be a type of Bridge.
Bridging depends on broadcasting to locate an
unknown device . Once a device has been located, its
location is recorded with its MAC address in a table (eg.
LAN1 A & B, LAN2 C & D). A bridge will then only forward
messages onto the remote network segment if the device
is on that network. This technique reduces the amount of
traffic that the computers have to listen to on the
remote segment

- Routers - (OSI Layer 3)
- A device that forwards packets to the appropriate
network from information in the message (eg. if the
computer A wants to send a message to computer E using
the IP protocol it will send a message from 10.0.0.1 to
12.0.0.1. The router will be setup to know that all
12.*.*.* messages need to go out on a particular WAN or
LAN link.
