  • Ethernet (802.3) CSMA/CD - Carrier Sense Multiple Access / Collision Detection. Ethernet uses a bus, where each device listens (Carrier Sense) to see if the bus is free. Any device can access (Multiple Access). If more than one device transmits at the same time there will be a collision which also is monitored (Collision Detection) by each device, where they will hold off until the bus is free again.
    • 10-Base-2 (10 megabits per second over 'Thin Wire' coax 185m)
    • 10-Base-5 (10 megabits per second over 'Thick Wire' coax 500m)
    • 10-Base-F (10 megabits per second over fibre)
    • 10-Base-T (10 megabits per second over twisted pair 1,00m)
    • 100-Base-T Fast Ethernet (100 megabits per second over twisted pair CAT5)
    • 1000-Base-T Gigabit Ethernet (1,000 megabits per second over twisted pair CAT5e/CAT6)
  • Token Ring (802.5) - The network is constructed in a circle. A token is passed around the circle. A device can catch the token and attach a message to continue on round the ring.
  • FDDI - Fiber Distributed Data Interface. A token ring type network supporting rates upto 100 megabits per second
