There are no longer clear distinctions on Micro/Mini/Mainframe
servers. As operating systems eg. Linux can be run on a Micro,
Mini, Mainframe and a super computer. Server virtulisation is
even now available on your laptop. Microsoft windows sever is
now running on servers with up to 64 processors and
multithreading, multicore, multiprocessor with clustering is
providing super computer performance.
- Micro / WinTel (Small)
- Microsoft Windows operating systems runinng on AMD
or Intel processors
- NT / 2000 Server / 2003 Server / 2008 Server
- eg. Dell,
HP,
IBM

DELL 2950 |
|
- Cluster
- Running services across multiple servers
- Hyper-threading
- execute threads in parallel over multiple cores
- SMP
- Symmetric Multiprocessing. Multiple processors in a
system. (2003 Server: Standard Edition up to 4
processors, Enterprise Edition supports up to 8
processors, Data Centre supports 32 processors, Data
Centre x64 supports 64 processors)
- Multicore
- Multiple processors on a single chip
- Virtual Server / VM / LPAR / Partition
- Running several severs on a single platform,
partitioning: memory, processing, network and disk (eg.
Microsoft Virtual Server 2005)
- Blade
- Multiple computers in a single chassis

DELL 1955 |
- Mini (Midrange)
- UNIX / LINUX / VMS / AS400
- eg. IBM,
HP,
Sun
 |
|
Sun Sun Fire
E25K |
- Mainframe (Large)
- Are large scale computers capable of running
multiple operating systems, handling large i/o
input/outputs with many users eg:
IBM,
Unisys
 |
|
IBM System z10
|
- Supercomputer
- Are very fast processing systems for complex
modelling eg.Cray
